Spread of the microbrewery wave in Europe

Spread of the microbrewery wave in Europe

(1990 – 2020)

The brewing map of Europe has changed unprecedentedly over the last thirty years. One of the major impacts of globalisation has been, on the one hand, the continued acquisitions of traditional industrial breweries by transnational corporations, leading to a production concentration, and, on the other hand, the growth in the number of small breweries as a response by consumers and local producers to the global standardisation of production and taste. The map application shows in detail how the brewing wave spread through Europe from traditional brewing areas to the ‘beer’ periphery. It contains unique data on the exact location of all breweries located in Europe between 1990 and 2020, including the year of their foundation.
